Letting someone into your home to care for a parent is a big decision. A few direct questions before the first visit show you quickly whether a service is careful, honest and safe.
Key points
- Ask who will visit and what they are qualified to do.
- Medical procedures should follow a doctor’s advice or prescription.
- A good service explains clearly what is included and tells you when a hospital is needed.
- Be careful with services that promise to do everything without any questions.
Ask who will visit
- What is the qualification of the nurse or professional who will come?
- What are they trained and allowed to do at home?
- Will the same person visit regularly, as far as possible?
Ask how doctors are involved
Procedures such as injections, IV medicines, catheter and tube care and dressings should follow a doctor’s advice. A good service asks for the prescription or helps arrange a doctor review, and tells you when a patient needs a doctor rather than a nurse.
Ask about hygiene and consent
- How is hygiene maintained during each visit?
- Are supplies clean or sterile, and how are used items disposed of?
- Will the nurse explain what they are about to do and ask for consent?
Ask about communication
- Is there one number to call for questions and changes?
- How quickly will they respond and tell you what is possible?
- Will they update you after each visit?
Warning signs of a poor service
- It promises any procedure without asking about the patient or the prescription
- It cannot tell you who will visit or what they are qualified to do
- It never mentions a hospital, even for a patient who is getting worse
- It pressures you to book a long package before a first visit

Frequently asked questions
Should a home nurse be registered?
You can ask about the nurse’s qualification and registration before you confirm the visit. A responsible service will answer openly.
Can I try one visit first?
Yes. A single visit is a good way to judge the service before arranging more.
What if I am not happy with the service?
Tell the service what went wrong and ask for it to be put right. You can stop at any time.
Not for emergencies. Home healthcare does not replace emergency hospital care. In a medical emergency, contact emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.
